Dan’s Pick of the Week 01/11/07

Air: French Band have been a staple of my music catologue since their record label debut “Moon Safari” in 1998. I have and would strongly recomend any of their releases to anyone, no matter what their musical tastes are. Their next album “Pocket Symphony” is due this February and looks to be interesting as they’ve learned how to use traditional Japanese instruments and will be including them on various tracks along with their usual collection of electronic and rock instrumentation.
Recently, I stumbled upon a nice collection of live Air tracks, which was pretty surprising and incredibly good. One of their more well known songs is “Sexy Boy.” This video is of them performing a very different and funkier take on the song along with the band Phoenix. Instead of having the straight forward 4/4 distorted blast that’s found on “Moon Safari,” they put more emphasis on the percussive side of things and turn the song more danceable. It’s almost as if they extracted the skeleton of both “Sexy Boy” and “Funky Town” and made an unstopable groove robot.
