The Breeders - CannonBall

Back when Y100 was still around, this song got quite a few spins. I remember sitting in the front seat of my parent’s blue Dodge minivan, watching the development of now consumer giant, Exton, PA pass by as I sang “AWWWOOOOOOOoooooooooAWWWOOOOOOOooooooooo” to my heart’s content. The Breeders hit a nerve and this hit off of their 1993 platinum release Last Splash will forever keep them as “that one band that had that awesome song about a ball or something.”

CannonBall gets me every time. Maybe it’s the anticipation of waiting to hear those drum sticks smack the rim of the snare, maybe it’s the wandering, almost purposeless style of the song structure, or perhaps it’s the crush I have on lead vocalist Kim Deal. Regardless, you have to respect a band that effectively emulates a modem dial with guitar feedback. Please sit back and wallow in the bass.
