Just Enjoy the Fucking Movie!

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2007

I like films that make you think just as much as the next guy, but there is something refreshing about leaving the theater saying “the coolest part was when the guy’s head fell off.” 300 won’t win any awards for character development or plot nuances, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a fun flick to see with your buddies.

Beer Time: Rochefort Trappistes 8

Sunday, April 1st, 2007

That which is different tends to interest me. This beer, Rochefort Trappistes 8 is a beer brewed by monks in an abbey in Belgium. Only six or so of these abbeys have the right to apply the term “trappistes” to their beers, so this is some pretty esoteric stuff.

Maybe it’s just because I’m not a beer snob, but I didn’t find this beer particularly enjoyable. This is disappointing, not only because it received such rave reviews on ratebeer.com, but also because of the bottle’s price tag (elaborated below). (more…)

Doctor Hoot and A Holler

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Hello! Rifty here, hope our five readers are doing well! This little article’s been bouncing around my head for weeks and weeks and weeks, from just after the Linux one actually. But for one reason or another I could never actually manage to articulate everything. Not much of a problem with me usually, so as you can imagine it became quite a sore point for me.

So Dan’s been bugging me to write Something right? Loves content that man does, and frankly I’ve been thinking we’ve dipped into the random and crazy MSPaint pool a bit much. I sat here and thought and thought and thought, trying desperately to come up with a solid piece of writing.

Nothing came up, nothing at all.

What’s a college age writer to do?

Do it all at once late at night while drinking lots of coffee of course! So that’s the plan, everything’s been written in the last eight minutes, and I’ve always had a topic, so I figure I’ll rant away.

I’ve got a reputation as the resident geek, and it’s not exactly a undeserving title. I can talk about Star Wars, The Enterprise (All eight of em!) how warp drives work and I can explain how to play Yu-Gi-Oh in fifteen minutes. But all these pale in comparison to the one thing I love more than Lord of the Rings and the Original Trilogy and Seven of Nine’s magnificent curves.

Doctor Who.

Weltraumen Kriegen!

Sunday, March 18th, 2007

Not too long ago, in a forum not too far away, I made a thread in which members of the Space Pirate community posted some of their favorite Star Wars quotes, and I attempted to translate them into German. Here is the result of that thread. First is the original quote, followed by it’s German translation, then in parentheses are literal translations from German.

That’s no moon…it’s a space station!
Das ist kein Mond…es ist eine Weltraumstation! (That is no moon…it is a space station!)

Hold ‘em off. Angle the deflector shield while I make the calculations for the jump to light speed.
Verteudig gegen ihrem! Angel das Abfälschenschild, obwohl ich kalkuliere für die Lichtgeschwindigkeit gehen! (Defend against them! Angle the deflector shield while I calculate for the lightspeed going!)

It’s the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs. (more…)

Blood Monsoon II

Thursday, March 1st, 2007

This film (not yet rated) hearlded a new era of quality within the movie making industry. Stellar camera work, soul-shaking acting performances and out of this world special effects have cemented this movie in the heart of the human psyche. Many can find influences from Kubrick, Spielberg and Scorsese. This movie gets two thumbs, way up!

Ghost Ride the Shit

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

Nick. Nick Cage. Listen to me. You are a good actor. I didn’t believe it at first, but after Lord of War, Adaptation, Matchstick Men, and the Weather Man, you have convinced me. So why, why would you take that belief you’ve so carefully built from hours of flawlessly emotive facial acting, and irregular speech pattern quirkiness only you can provide and smash its unsuspecting skull against the rocks over and over again until you need dental records to identify the mass of blood and viscera that remains at the closing credits of Ghost Rider?

Now, I will say that you may have attempted the best you could with what you had to work with. Dialogue as deep and existentially mind-bending as “I’m gonna take this curse, and use it against you” or, “Don’t let the fear control you. Don’t let the fear control you.” begs the question, why would you let such verbal atrocities escape your very experienced and creative MAW, if you knew, as I think we all knew from the first trailer, that these very words discredited you and left your movie playing a game of unecessary catch up before it even opened?

I wash my hands of you for now.

Retro Game Review: Samurai Shodown IV

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

Most game reviews scope out newly released games, but today I’m taking a look at a blast from the past.

That blast of which I speak is Samurai Shodown (sic) IV: Amakusa’s Revenge, released in 1996 for arcade and Neo Geo.

I have been playing Samurai Shodown games since the early 90’s. I owned the original game for Sega Genesis, but sold it (in retrospect, I wish I had kept it). While browsing Demonoid one day, I came across a torrent for a Windows version of Samurai Shodown 4, and quickly nabbed it. (more…)

Superlative Super Bowl Stories - Part 2

Sunday, February 4th, 2007

I don’t remember how I got there; like a scene from a nightmare the scene simply unfolded around me, the how or the why inconsequential. The haunted moon lit my retreat beneath a sky whose stars disappeared one by one every night. As I ran through the trees and over rocks I could hear them behind me; the neighing and the braying of the Indianapolis Colts offensive line echoed over the trees, obfuscating their whereabouts as they pursued me through the underbrush. Blood Monsoon II Preview

Thursday, February 1st, 2007

The year was 2004… I think.

The setting was Henderson Highschool.

What happened on this time at this place was an event that no one will forget. Or remember. Well, they may have mentioned it anecdotaly to their freinds. One time. I’m not really sure.

The preview that warned an entire generation of an oncoming storm of filth. Nothing could prepare them for THE BLOOD MONSOON [II]!!!

We were way ahead of the making cheesy action movies to be ironically funny curve.

Superlative Super Bowl Stories - Part 1

Wednesday, January 31st, 2007

I would have to say Bears all the way, but for different reasons than most people. I haven’t told this story to that many people…but I think it’s something I can finally come to terms with here…in the warm, loving cradle that is the Spacepiratesltd forums…

Many moons ago, on a road called the Pennsylvania interstate, I was driving with my favorite teddy bear…who I called Buddy. (more…)

Concerning The Nature of Dirt and Dreams

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

Life, in all of its majesty, comes from dirt. A dark, solitary expanse of nothing that surrounds all the complexities of the world. When humans die they rot, lie alone surrounded by earth, and eventually turn into dirt – surely it is not too much of a stretch then to assume that at some point mankind and dirt were at least made from the same stuff. It is not the miniscule nutrients and minerals within the dirt that we must concentrate on however, but rather the bleakness of it. The nothing that we think of when we imagine what exists beneath the ground. (more…)
