Talk about upcoming concerts, concerts you went to, want to go to, etc. On Sunday, January 3rd I went to see Gogol Bordello at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC. I was a little worried that their antics which absolutely wowed me when I saw them in Brussels in 2007 would have gotten old, but nope, these guys still put on a show like no other. For example: in 2007, they had 2 dancers come out and bang on marching bass drums. Now, they still have them, except at the end of the show they handed a bass drum to the crowd, and the percussionist climbed on top and crowd surfed on top of the drum. Perhaps part of the reason why I had more fun was because I'm more familiar with their songs than I was in 2007. They played fan favorites like "Not a Crime," "Think Locally, Fuck Globally," and had a passionate encore with "Alcohol." They also played some new material that was really good. My friend got this awesome t-shirt. I got one that, in the greatness of Slavic mistakes with the English language, reads "Axis Mundi: Live from Intersection of All Dimentions." I still encourage everyone to go see Gogol Bordello live if at all possible. It WILL be worth it. Coming up on February 4th I'm going to see one of my favorite funk bands, Galactic, at the TLA on South Street in Phillydelly.

In February I'll be going to see St. Vincent at the Metro. I was crazy about their (her) recent album, Actor, but I also gave listened to the first album and like it just as equally, which I did not expect. I do have some hesitations though, since it seems like live versions of songs are quite different than their studio counterparts. I'll be sure to let you all know how it turns out.
The best blues bar in Chitown is undoubtedly the Kingston Mines. Its got two stages, with two bands trading off sets until 4 am, every night of the week. There is no lack of talent in the blues musicians who play there, and I've never been disappointed. A must see for anyone who visits.

First and foremost, Lady Gaga was fucking amazing. End of story. I have no words for that free bitch, shes amazing. I don't care if you don't like her music or think shes a con artist, her show was top notch and visionary. The people there were bad ass also! For about 45 mins before her show, they were blasting MJ through the speakers and people were dancing through the aisles and forming conga lines. It was pretty hilarious and wonderful. "And every minute of the day, the truth is that I'm dead. Until I'm here on stage with you, then I'm alive instead." - Lady Gaga A video montage someone made of the concert the night before my show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyfKWqsLAZgMother fuckin' Bad Romance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJagm_WNphgMonster(mycurrentfavorite!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h268FyjAyOoSpeechless/her talking to the crowd a little bit about how she got one of her teachers fired. People were hysterically crying around me after this song, it was pretty intense.: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxPXN-3IX6QSome fan-shots: (this was fucking GORGEOUS live) (my favorite part of the show, a giant ass video of black-haired gaga puking neon green on fashion-gaga) Ry and I made our own shirts, which turned out pretty bad ass. We're seriously considering selling these bitches on etsy or something. And an advantage of living in the gayborhood is easy access to body-glitter. The funniest part of the evening is some drunk dude trying to explain that the bolt was inspired by David Bowie. I was very "I KNOW BITCH." Thats it for now. I'm still lamenting the loss of Gaga.

Concert report: Galactic
I'm gonna go ahead and say that Galactic are the best funk band since Funkadelic. Ho-lee scheisse these dudes can groove.
The opening act, Tea Leaf Green, were alright. They reminded me of a lot of bands, but in a bad way. They were a generic, white boy jam band. Which is a shame, because their guitarist could rip and their bassist was solid. After they finished, Galactic started to get set up. Sound check lasted what felt like 30 minutes, so the crowd was pretty impatient when they finally took the stage.
Galactic are about to release a new album, and the sax player said they'd be playing a lot of new material that night. Aside from 2 covers ("Can ya Hear Me Knockin'" by the Rolling Stones and "Paid in Full" by Eric B. and Rakim") and 1 original, I didn't recognize any of the songs they played. But damn, it was sick, and there wasn't a single song I didn't enjoy. The lineup consisted of a sax player (baritone and tenor), a guest tromboner (lol) in Corey Henry (a BAMF-lookin' dude who sported sunglasses and a ghetto snarl the entire evening), guitarist, bassist, keyboard player, and my current drum hero, Stanton Moore. Starting with the 3rd song, they had a special guest, Cyril Neville of the Meters and Neville Brothers fame. The dude was rockin' a red shirt, red doo rag, red sparkly shoes and a straw cowboy hat, and had one of the most soulful voices I've ever heard.
Well, they ripped for almost 2 hours straight. At one point Corey Henry hopped off the stage as he was soloing, and walked through the crowd. Later on, he didn't so much stage dive as stage lean over and fall into the crowd. An über-tight horn section churned out lines over fat basslines and grooves.
They closed the set with "From the Corner to the Block" off the album of the same name, and then came back and closed the encore with "When the Saints Go Marchin' In" (they are from N'awlins, after all).
By the end, it was 1:30AM, my ears were killing me, and I had 100ccs of funk flying through my system. I highly recommend Galactic to ANYONE.

Embraced the whiteness in me and saw Vampire Weekend last night. Here is what I saw:
-A very tight, very competent band play some great tunes, mixing it up between their 1st and 2nd album. -Some of the worst white-boy dance moves ever
Seriously it hurt/entertained me to watch them dance around on stage, but they were really great with getting the crowd involved and had much better stage presence than I expected. They must of played for barely over an hour though, and they didn't even play all their material (which would of stretched it to maybe and hour and twenty?) One complaint was the venue was not meant to carry sound effectively, and I dont think the sound crew knew how to do much besides make everything really loud. If you do get a chance to see this band live, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

mits, keep us posted on your band's shows ! i saw okgo for free in philly on saturday, and it was reaaaaallly fun. they are a crazy fun band ! that periodically walks off the stage to talk to people, pulls fans from the audience onstage, puts down their instruments to play a song completely in handbells. they threw tamborines into the audience and made us sing and pose for big, energetic group pictures. they were fun and unserious, and that's exactly what i wanted them to be. also tom's band is playing at johnny brenda's in philly at the end of this month ? ? i've never been to jb's but i've heard really, really good things. if anyone is going to that, let me know

Just got back from the Crystal Castles show, that was preceeded by some pretty awesome shit. Destructo, and Rusko, which was the first time I'd really 'heard' dubstep, as its meant to be listened to. Gotta say I did enjoy it. Crowd was cool, club was decent, glo-sticks everywhere, a good time. Crystal Castles played surprisingly few of their new songs, though the ones they did choose to play were the good ones off the new CD, so I was happy. Beyond that they played all the favorites, giving the crowd more or less exactly what they wanted. Alice must of been snorting adderal ... she truly had a tornado-like presence on stage and crowd-surfing as well. The lighting was great, and the music was also surprisingly good - I was pleasantly shocked to hear the quality of their playing, and better yet they hardly used any pre-recorded music, if any. Each song was truly performed, wheras the DJ's before them were just that - DJs.
Good stuff. I'm going to pass out now, my feet are KO'd

ahaha my friends and I actually stuck out pretty hard. At one point I stood in a hallway that had a nice breeze running through it watching people and about 13 people mistook me for a bouncer Next time I'll be sure to wear lots of fluorescent shit and glo-sticks
