One of My External Hard Drives is Being a Real Jerk

Whenever I try to copy a file onto my new external hard drive I keep getting this error code:
"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "file x" could not be read or written.
(error code -36)"
I googled the problem (exhausting my technical research skills). I installed the recommended mac update to no avail. Most of the accounts of the problem I read have to do with folders instead of individual files. This started a few days ago. I've not been able to back up anything. This has been a problem for .avi, .mp4, .wmv and .pdf files.
This HD has been giving me problems for a while. But now it won't back up anything.
Any ideas guys?
